The Jake Paul v. Mike Tyson fight, hosted by Netflix, was the most widely viewed sporting event ever on the platform. Over 100 million people watched the fight worldwide. However, the event did not go off without a hitch, with tens of thousands of subscribers reporting issues with the stream. Now they are seeking compensation through a proposed class action lawsuit.
Fight Glitches
Before the event even started, the hashtags “NetflixBroken” and “buffering” appeared as trending topics on X (formerly Twitter). Tens of thousands of users reported issues with glitches, buffering, and even inability to access the stream entirely.
By the end of the evening, there were roughly 97,000 reports of issues. After the fight, Netflix reportedly declined to offer refunds or discounts.
The Lawsuit’s Claims
A Florida resident filed the lawsuit seeking damages on behalf of viewers who had trouble watching the fight. The suit alleges that Netflix was woefully underprepared for the event and makes makes several claims:
Breach of Contract
The plaintiff alleges that Netflix failed to fulfill its contractual obligations by providing the streaming services as agreed upon in their contract with subscribers. The plaintiff asserts that they suffered damages in the form of monetary loss due to charges for undelivered services.
Deceptive Trade Practices
The lawsuit also alleges that Netflix engaged in unfair or deceptive acts or practices by charging the plaintiff for services they were unable to provide. This failure caused the plaintiff to suffer monetary loss in the form of charges for undelivered services as well as inconvenience and frustration.
Consumer Protection Violations
Finally, plaintiffs allege that Netflix violated Florida’s Consumer Collection Practices Act by not providing the contractually obligated services they were required to supply.
The attorney representing the plaintiffs said, “We filed this class action because people were not given what they were promised.” He also said that he hopes this lawsuit changes the way streaming platforms prepare for high-profile events in the future.
Netflix has not yet commented on the lawsuit but has several additional live-streaming events planned for 2025.
