Michigan Radio in partnership with NPR details disgraced doctor Larry Nassar and his actions against hundreds of girls in their new series titled “Believed”. Currently on its second episode, the series takes a deep dive into who Nassar was and how he was able to get away with everything he did. The series also highlights the story of the female survivors, detectives, and prosecutors that were able to get justice and find their power in the case. The series is part of a group of series NPR is going to distribute. According to news stories about “Believed” and the other series, they will all be released by early 2019.

Nassar worked for USA Gymnastics, the governing body of gymnastics in the United States, as the national team doctor. He was responsible for treating athletes like Olympic gold medalists Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman, and Simone Biles. Nassar was also a doctor Michigan State University where he treated student athletes at the university. According to a timeline produced by the Lansing State Journal, allegations started to surface about Nassar in 1997 but a criminal complaint wasn’t filed until 2016. After lengthy investigations by various media reports on the allegations, Nassar was fired in mid-2016. The doctor was eventually put on trial to face charges of sexual abuse. Nassar eventually pleaded guilty to sexually girls during his time as team doctor for both institutions. He was sentenced to what is essentially a life in prison for possessing child pornography and for sexually assaulting girls. He would serve part of sentence in federal prison and another set of time state prison. Nassar’s sentencing was covered nationally with victims being allowed to read their statements to him.

According to a story on Michigan Radio’s website, the series has received high ratings from listeners and garnered positive reviews. The series is hosted by reporters who covered the scandal which made national news.
